Note form Mollie – Help our Avondale Neighbors:

Hello Zoo Family!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner so our friends from the Avondale Community Council are raising funds to help our neighbors buy food their family feasts! There are two ways to give this year- deliver cash or check directly to Brittany OR Venmo* me.

Nearly half of Avondale’s population of ~12,000 lives below poverty level so food insecurity is one of the biggest issues our neighbors face. Last year ACC collected enough money to purchase $50 Kroger gift cards for 750 families. If you are in a place to give, a donation of ANY amount is appreciated! Let’s help them increase the number of families who receive a gift card this year!

By FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21st:

  • Drop cash or a check payable to Avondale Community Council with Brittany on the Third Floor of Education. Checks should include AADBC Thanksgiving 2022 on the memo line.
    • If Brittany is not at her desk, please place or check in  an envelope and put it in the top bin of the Blue hanging folders by her desk.  All envelopes will be collected at locked up at the end of the evening.
  • Venmo me and I’ll write one check for the total donated. Please put AADBC 2022 in What’s if for? (Scan attached code or find me on Venmo @M-ONe)

*ACC will not accept donations via apps, but since many of you asked me about this last year, I wanted to make this an option and this was the easiest way to do this. If you plan to include this donation on your taxes as a deduction do not use the Venmo option since I’m not a non-profit, please give cash or check.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all! I’ll be sure share the total amount we raise once all the cash, checks and Venmo payments are tallied on Friday.

THANK YOU for considering a donation! Together, we can help make Thanksgiving better for our Avondale neighbors 🙂

 Construction Updates:

No Additional Updates, all projects are still ongoing.

Area Closures:

  • If a Habitat is Closed and it is not listed on “The Daily” – Send me an e-mail so I can contact Visitor Experience and make sure we add it.

Animal Updates:

  • Africa

    •  Hippo Cove will be open at normal time starting Tuesday, 10/18!
      • The bad news is with the cold snap we won’t be able to put Fritz and Bibi out until the temperature is 40° and sunny which means Fiona and Tucker will be out at 9 AM and Bibi and Fritz will join them a few hours later into the morning.
  • Elephant

    • Please see the note below to answer questions from guests.
      • See the note below from Christina Gorsuch:
In preparation for Elephant Trek and elephants on the move, a giant crate will be delivered, via giant crane, on Friday morning so the elephants can become comfortable seeing it and start the long process of being conditioned to walk into it voluntarily.  This is important for the ease and safety of future moves. The path in front of Education/Elephant will be closed until around noon on Friday.”

The message below is the shortened version of the message that the Communications Department:

A giant crate was delivered, via giant crane, so the elephants can become comfortable seeing it and start the long process of being conditioned to walk into it voluntarily.  This is important for the ease and safety of future moves.”

  • Gorilla

      • No Additional Updates at this time.
      • Mbeli is Doing Well!
      • An Ambassador reported that Bob was showing his screen to the Gorillas and was concerned.  I reported this to Victoria and you can see her response below:
        • “The girls really like screens… kids these days!!   We do offer media via screens/projectors BTS for enrichment. I’m not too concerned about the observation, but would be if he seems aggressive with the behavior or does it in a way to agitate the gorillas. I LOVE that the volunteers are noticing unusual activity/patterns of behavior. We really appreciate them wanting to advocate for the gorillas 🙂 “
    • Gorilla Troop Configurations:  Ndume, M’Linzi & Mara — Chewie, Gladys, Mona & Elle – “The Chew Crew” — Mshindi, Bandia & Tulivu (and eventually Mbeli)

  • Additional Information
    • Isla the Tamandua is Pregnant
      • Exciting news!  Isla the tamandua is pregnant!  See the fetus in detail in this high-def video of her latest ultrasound.  We will share via the Zoo’s social channels later today. Due date is December.
    • Manatees
      • SwimShady, Alby, and Manhattan did great on their journey back to Florida. They arrived at SeaWorld Orlando on a beautiful sunny day, started eating right away, and checked out their new temporary home.  The next day they joined five other males who will be returning back to the wild with them in early 2023.
      • We are expecting a new group of Manatees before next season!
    • Avian Flu
      • Fall Migration is here!  Avian Flu has been detected within 120 miles of Cincinnati. Because of the sensitive nature of the most recent cases, we have decided to activate our high level protocol immediately.
      • All collection birds have been removed from outdoor habitats and either moved indoors or relocated to spaces with additional wild bird deterrents.   Our Free Flight Aviary, South America, and Australasia habitats are closed, VIPenguin tours and African penguin feedings discontinued, and the Interpretive and Bird Experience teams have modified their programs when applicable.
    • Keep an eye out for the Spotted Lantern Fly
      • Hopefully your team saw the message in the Volunteer Update, if not please direct them to the information so they can be on the lookout.
