Migratory Birds – You Just Witnessed a Bird Crash into a Window at the Zoo. What do you do?

Good morning,

Join me in welcoming back our migratory birds this spring! One of the significant challenges birds face on their journey is avoiding collisions with glass windows. This year, we are launching a robust bird strike monitoring program to track how often birds crash into windows on Zoo grounds and which of our windows are the most prominent problems to address.

We need your help! When you see or hear a bird strike or find an injured or dead bird that has crashed into a window, please radio (channel 1) or call the bird department (559-8353) to report it. If you can,  stay with the bird until the keepers arrive to collect information from you and retrieve the bird. Attached is a handy-dandy flow chart of the protocol that you might want to keep on hand or put up in your area for reference.

Thanks so much for helping us become better bird neighbours!

Yours,
