Volunteer Educator Program Update
As many of you know, Rhiannon has been leading an effort to make our Zoo more accessible for all since last year. We’ve come a long way and are ready to welcome guests from the
developmental disabilities community for a special day on Tuesday, August 14. More details are in the release below.
WCPO posted a nice article this morning about the initiative:

Animal Updates 8/11/18
Animal Management Meeting Updates – 8/8/18
Minutes:
- Research proposal- researcher is studying dinosaur reproduction- wants videos of rhinos breeding. Seems like a harmless study.
- Painted dogs are doing well. Pack dynamics seem stable without a clear alpha at this time.
- PR- Blue Death Feigning Beetle story- combining with 40th anniversary of World of Insect.
- PR- Access for All Day story coming out soon.
- Wanting further discussion on bringing more birds in for the aviaries.
- Tony is still working on the new animal transport vehicle.
- Black-footed Cat semen came in from South Africa. CREW is working on potential AI’s with Black-footed Cat, Children’s Park Buyout this weekend. Expecting 9,000 visitors per evening.
Bearline:
- Wolf Woods holding area renovations are almost completed, work being finalized on squeeze cage installation.
Quarantine:
- Halfway through QT and everyone is doing well.
- Scarlet Ibis have started to eat the flamingo diet pellet very well and are not as nervous when keepers are moving around the area.
- Savannah Monitor is eating 100%. Monitor has started to calm down but still prefers to move around when you’re not in room. We are trying to get it to use the exercise platform. It will go on it for its diet but is not making the association with exercise.
- Grey Fox is doing great. The plan is to bring down the other fox to do intros after QT is over. This will free up the exhibit to get some work done.

Interpretive:
The 2 bird show chickens will return to the Children’s Zoo chicken group after the show season.- “Lil” three-banded armadillo is on birth watch. We could have a baby ‘dillo any day now!
- Isla and Salvador tamanduas are getting along famously and enjoying their days in the new outdoor enclosure at CZ next to the goat yard.
- Lucy Bearcat has also been spotted using her exhibit! (she’s so secretive!)
Primate:
- Full physical introductions started between Mshindi gorilla and females Chewie and Asha last week. First day went very well. Allowed to stay together for most of the day. Continued this throughout the week. Later in the week allowed access together from the outdoor habitat back into holding.
- Baby saki doing great. Colorations getting more defined to determine gender. No announcement yet.
- 0.1 Colobus Anza’s pregnancy continues to show more. Active, eating and doing great.
