Family Community Service Event – Ohio River Clean-up
October 3 & 8, 11:45 AM – 4:00 PM
Join us and our friends with Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) on the Ohio River to clean up as much debris and trash that we can find! We’ll take jon boats to LL&W’s barge, enjoy some lunch while we learn more about their mission, and then head out to some of the more difficult-to-access banks of the Ohio River to clean up as much as we can.
Living Lands & Waters was founded in 1998 and has become the only “industrial strength” river cleanup organization like it in the world. Their goal is to aid in the protection, preservation, and restoration of the natural environment of the nations’ major rivers and their watersheds, along with expanding awareness of environmental issues surround the river and create the desire and opportunity within communities for stewardship and responsibility for a cleaner river environment. To date, LL&W has worked on 24 rivers, in 21 states and with the help of over 100,000 volunteers removed over 9.8 million pounds of trash from U.S. rivers, including our own Ohio River.
This opportunity is open to adults, families, and small groups with members ages 7 and older with a parent or guardian present. Participants should be willing and able to climb in and out of boats, walk on the rocky/muddy shore, pick up debris, and carry bags of trash. This activity may not be appropriate for people that have a heart condition, back or knee issues, are pregnant, are highly allergic to poison ivy or bee stings, or have a low tolerance for heat or rain. LL&W and the Zoo will provide trash bags and life jackets. We’ll be outside the entire time and won’t let a few raindrops get in our way; however, if severe weather presents itself, we’ll have to cancel due to safety reasons. Total participation is limited to 40 on October 3, and 60 on October 8.
