American Burying Beetle Presentation with Mandy at Fernald (FREE!)

When people think of an endangered species they picture animals like tigers, gorillas or giant pandas. Scaly, slimy, or six-legged creatures are usually overlooked. The American burying beetle is among these important, but oft-forgotten species. The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has been working with the Fernald Preserve since 2013 to help reestablish this critically endangered insect. Join us as Team Leader Mandy Pritchard discusses a conservation program that has been happening in your own backyard.

2:00pm to 4:00pm

Fernald Preserve Visitors Center (ample parking)

7400 Willey Road, Hamilton, Ohio 45030

The Program will begin in the Visitors Center where you’ll learn about this creature’s bizarre, but important life cycle, what is causing its current status, and what progress we have made so far. After the presentation, we will have a meet and greet with some live beetles and then head out to the field to get a firsthand look at the release area and survey methods being used.

In the event of inclement weather, the outdoor portion of this presentation will be modified to take place inside the Visitors Center.

PLEASE NOTE: If you’re planning on hiking out with us for the last half of the program it’s about a mile and a half total on a level gravel pathway and then a few hundred feet through mowed grass. Wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes and long pants.
