Bald Eagle Flights at GABP

Sam and Eddie made their first GABP diamond appearance last week. They have scheduled appearances May 19 and 24, June 6 and 20 (Zoo Night).
If you haven’t seen Sam soar down from the center field deck to the pitcher’s mound before, you should definitely try to catch one of these games. Arrive early so you don’t miss it.

Bowyer Farm Update
Birding at Bowyer

With approximately 50 nest boxes scattered throughout the restored wetland and native prairie at the zoo’s Bowyer Farm, a crew of five volunteers currently monitors the boxes recording nesting success for bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds. One of the volunteers, Sylvia Hadley, also monitors a kestrel box and actively bands birds of
all species that migrate through the property in the Spring. This program is just one example of the zoo’s local conservation efforts that complement its global efforts that focus on more exotic species.

Amali

Amali is really growing into her personality, and while she still spends time close to mom she’s been adventuring away more and more. She can be found swinging all over both habitats, and has found a love of jumping from the top of the tree on the indoor habitat into their hammock. She has started playing chase with keepers behind the scenes, and loves training… So far she’s mastered “belly” and “touch.” Her favorite food is grapes, and she loves to look at kids through the glass!

Kendi Update

We are so excited that Kendi is a Dad! Kendi was born at the Cincinnati Zoo in July of 2017. We are thrilled he has successfully bred and added another critically endangered black rhino to the world!
Birthdays
4/23 – Mama Pickles and Kiki
4/26 – Rozi
5/2 – Tulivu

Tulivu turned 19 earlier this month!
5/1 – Mai Thai

Mai Thai celebrated her 50th Birthday on May 1st with some special enrichment, cake, and friends! The excellent health that our two geriatric female elephants enjoy is certainly a result of the excellent care they receive. One of Mai Thai’s keepers does regular exercise sessions, similar to yoga stretches, with her to keep her flexible and minimize age-related aches and pains.

CREW

Our scientists at CREW are working to conserve valuable oak trees! So far this spring, our Plant Research Division has received cuttings of various endangered oak species from over a dozen institutions across the country to study the process of initiating those cuttings into tissue culture. After being established in culture, those species can be propagated and stored long-term in liquid nitrogen. One day in the future, if a species is wiped out by disease or a changing climate, that material can be brought out of storage and used to restore wild populations, saving not just the oaks but the many different species that rely on them to survive.

Zero Waste Update
Mallory and I would love to thank everyone for their support and participation in our Zero-Waste efforts for Tunes & Blooms! Over the last four Thursdays, with the help of our exceptional volunteers, we were able to divert roughly 80% of our waste from the landfill at each of our waste stations. That measures out to be about 500 lbs. of waste kept out of the landfill! This effort is a work in progress towards our goal of Net Zero Waste by 2025, we have a ways to go, but are thrilled to be making progress. For more information on our Sustainability projects and goals, please visit the Sustainability Department’s Vine page.
Any questions about the Zoo’s Zero-Waste programs, can be directed to myself, [email protected] or [email protected]
Cheers!
