I first found out at 7am on Channel 5 news, but we were featured on National News around 8am. I have included the video I took of the segment of the TODAY show. It is not the best quality because it was on my phone, but I caught it!

Talking Points from the Communications Team:
- Bibi gave birth to a baby on National Watermelon Day, August 3, 2022 around 10pm.
- Hippo Cove is OPEN
- Bibi and baby, yet to be named, will stay separated from Tucker and Fiona for about two weeks while they bond.
- The name and sex of the baby are not yet known
- This is her first full-term pregnancy.
- The care team will keep a close eye on mom and baby, but they appear to be doing well.
- Hard to tell if nursing has occurred yet because the water is murky. They are sticking close to each other.
- Bibi is showing great maternal instincts.
- Bibi’s first baby, Fiona, was born six weeks premature and wouldn’t have survived without the intervention of her human caregivers.
- The baby’s sire, Tucker, moved to Cincinnati in 2021.
- Bibi is 23 and Tucker is 19. Fiona is 5.
- Hippo moms take their newborn babies away from the bloat for about two weeks in their natural habitat.
- Fiona is not leaving. There is enough space for 3 adults and a calf.
- When the calf is larger, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan will recommend the best place for the calf to go. That’s probably 3-4 years down the road.
The Zoo is accepting Suggestions for Baby Names! You can let the public know that there is a banner on the Zoo website where they can submit their Baby Name suggestions!

Heat Advisory Information:
- Make sure to care for yourself and stay cool and hydrated during the heat advisory this week. The safety of all ambassadors needs to be a top priority. If and volunteer needs to skip a shift this week or leave early, it is absolutely no problem.
- If Visitors show concern for our animals during a heat advisory, I would suggest some version of the message below:
- “The health and safety animals is a top priority, Animal staff has specific protocols to make sure that our animals are safely cared for in any type of extreme weather. All of our animals have access to cover and can escape any unfavorable conditions while in their outdoor habitats. Our keepers also have close relationships with our animals and they can easily recognize if they are stressed or uncomfortable and will take immediate action for their safety.”
